Open web.whatsapp.com on your browser, scan the QR code with the child&#8217;s phone, and you&#8217;ll see their chats on your screen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sounds easy. But there are problems.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your child can see the linked device. Go to WhatsApp &gt; Settings &gt; Linked Devices and every connected session is listed right there. If your child checks (and teenagers do check), they&#8217;ll see your computer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WhatsApp is making this even more visible. A beta update in April 2026 (version 2.26.15.6 for Android) introduced real-time alerts that notify users when a linked device becomes active. Once this rolls out fully, your child will get a notification every time you open their chats on your computer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You also need the physical phone to link. Unlike a monitoring app (which you install once), WhatsApp Web requires you to have the phone in hand to scan the QR code. If the session gets logged out or the phone restarts, you need the phone again.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bottom line: WhatsApp Web works for a quick check, but it&#8217;s not a long-term monitoring solution. Your child will find out.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Method_3_use_Google_Family_Link_cant_read_messages_at_all\"><\/span><strong>Method 3: use Google Family Link (can&#8217;t read messages at all)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m including this because a lot of parents try Family Link first and then wonder why they can&#8217;t see WhatsApp messages.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google Family Link is a free parental control tool. It manages screen time, approves app downloads, tracks location, and filters web content. That&#8217;s genuinely useful for younger kids.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Family Link cannot read text messages, WhatsApp messages, Instagram DMs, Snapchat, or any message content on any app. Google confirmed this in their own documentation, and every independent review (MMGuardian, Jellie&#8217;s App, NexSpy, Twenty-Four Consulting) says the same thing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Family Link shows you that your child spent 47 minutes on WhatsApp today. It can&#8217;t tell you who they talked to or what was said. For a 7-year-old who mostly watches YouTube, that&#8217;s probably fine. For a 14-year-old who&#8217;s active in group chats with people you&#8217;ve never met, screen time stats alone don&#8217;t tell you much.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can run Family Link and a monitoring app at the same time. They cover different things. Family Link handles screen time limits and app approvals.
